how about the battery cables from battery to starter and between batteries?...I had to replace all of mine when I first bought my diesel...they were full of corrosion and replacing them with #2 welding cable has meant a world of difference....NO PROBLEM since....other than that Id check the solenoids....they DO just die....lastly ...it IS possible for "rebuilt" starter to die....usually bushings and brushes are all thats replaced in a "rebuild"...along with a quick visual once over....older diesels ...being what they are....require some cranking in the cold...its hard on the starter and any weakness internally might have surfaced now....

Ok, i have a click at the starter, so i can jump the starter from jumpercables and it will turn the truck over momentaraly, then it grinds. I figured that the engine is locked up, so i got a breaker bar, i can turn the engine easily (about as easy as it should be but not siezed up) so i replaced the solenoid on the fender, no change it just sits there and clicks. If i jump right from my passenger batt to the starter it with engage then disengage, then it is a b*tch for it to re engage, but i dont think it is locked up, because if i just wait for a few mins, go over and jump it it will engage, then dis engage. It makes no difference where the engine is in the stroke, i can play with it and move it all around, it dont make a difference. I replaced my grounds my hot wires and cleaned all connections, the batteries were new march of 05, they have never had to be charged up before, and even if i put the batts. on chargers, it still clicks and doesnt make a difference. What do you think, i have a buddy in town that i built starters for last year, he can completely rebuild it for me, last time all i had him do was replace the soder, it threw its soder. What do you guys think, i have had to turn this thing over at least 5-10 times by hand, so i dont think its locked up.
Do you think i could just get away with replacing the actuator on top of the starter, when im jumping it the starter sounds fine until it starts free spinning, if im not mistaken isnt the actuator what engages the bendix to move the gear onto the flywheel? If this is bad do you think it would just allow it to spin like that?
Hey guys i really apologize for jumping to conclusions about having a locked up motor. I just wanted to think it was bad so now that its just a starter its not bad at all. Thank you for all of your help, and i think tomorrow im going to just get one of them good high torque starters from my friend. I will let you all know how it turns out, thanks again, Hey look at the bright side, this is my 50th post. God it is so nice not to have a mechanical truck i love these things. Thanks again.
Mike,
Before buying a new starter, have you checked the batteries? I had this happen last summer. I ended up haveing one with a dead cell in it. Try to jump it with another turck just a dead short and just hardly turn over. I used a battery tester to find the bad one and just dropped in a small battery to test my idea. It started right up then. No matter how had you try with a bad battery it willl not fire. Did the start seem like it was spinning over slower the last few starts, take longer to fire off? Batterys are easy to switch out.

This thing went from starting like it was new, to not even doing caca in 30 mins. But i have a new starter on order from my buddy. I had it hooked up to a powerstroke for about 45 mins, both batts hooked up to the powerstrokes batts. No diff. Im not to worried about it anymore. Thanks every one for the help.
