I have a 96 PS manual trans with 213,000 miles.Started running bad last week.It would start and run fine for about 2 seconds then start running terrible. I started looking around and found that the plug going into the valve cover gasket was melted on one end.So I pulled the valve cover and found that the plug was melted on the other side too,I changed the plugs on both sides and the valve cover gasket. Now it starts and runs smooth for 1-2 minutes then starts thrashing around running rough. The check engine light comes on when it starts the rough stuff but when I turn it off and turn the key back on the light is gone.I also took the fuel pressure regulator off and cleaned the screen which was pretty dirty but it still runs the same.Where do I go from here?
I would shoot for new valve cover gaskets and while in there and the glow plugs are original, change them and use a good dose of power service to the fuel.
the valve cover gasket I already replaced. While the valve cover was off I tried unplugging one injector at a time to see if it would run better or worse,to maybe see if it was a bad injector.I didn't understand the outcome though, even with one of the injectors unplugged it ran fine for the first minute or two then started rough. How does it run fine with an injector unplugged?Does this narrow down the search for the problem?
