steering column

My shift collar is broken. I just disassembled it and the upper bearing is gone so I'm sure the lower bearing is gone. Looks like I will have to replace both bearings & the shift collar. This is on a automatic tranny, power steering column.

NumberDummy, are there any NOS bearings & shift collars available?

If no NOS who out there has a good experience with repop parts?

I don't want tilt but would there be any advantages to using a Dentside non-tilt column? Is it a better design, more durable, etc?

Usually people do the dentside column to Get tilt and/or cruise. It can be done. It's not a plug and play type of deal. They bolt right to dash but rag joint different. Also wiring changes for turn signal switch and 4-way flashers. If you search on this and the "other" forum there is instructions out there on how to do it. I have a 1979 column slated for my Bump but I'm hesitating. I do want the tilt but the 1979 column is going to look out of place. They look different than the original bump's column.

I don't really like the looks of the dent coulumn so I think I'll just tackle fixing mine. I just wondered if there was some huge advantage but I just don't see it.

I just would like a Ford collar and bearing if I can find NOS. I use this truck daily so I want whatever parts I use to last as long as the originals did.

Anthony, Where have you looked? I live close by and picked up one from Rick at Carolina Classics last year. I would imagine that they are available many places. Over the years I have replaced a couple.

Other than length below the firewall (power steering) & dash cuff, I am not aware of column differences.

I didn't realilze that the bump and dent collar was the same up to 1977. I found the part number CODZ-7228-B and later D5TZ7228B. I found a few Ford ones online last night. My local parts store may have the I just wasn't sure about the quality. The NOS items are around $70. Donald Carpenter has new repop ones for $80, I wonder if they are any stronger with a new mix of metals.

I know realize after looking at the assembly diagram the last picture I posted is the bearing retainer. After looking at the bearing it looks good. Is there any hidden things that could make the bearing bad?

I don't always take the easy way out but maybe I can just replace the shift collar and shift isolator and be on my way.

I called them today but they are on vacation. They will be back Monday so I'll place an order.

My upper bearing column bearing looks very good. If I just reuse it should it have some lube? It seems dry. They are not sealed for sure. That may be an indication that I need to replace it and the lower. I just don't know.

Anthony, I imagine they are all the same potmetal repops. I would use the best price.

If you call Rick, tell him John over in Creedmoor sent you through FTE, maybe he won't charge you double.

Hmmm, maybe I'll not mention your name. I'm going to give them a call first thing Monday morning.

Thanks to both of you for mentioning them. I've never heard of them.

I got the parts ordered from Carolina Classics. They were on vacation last week so this morning he said he already had 9 orders for shift collars. His version come with the gear indicator & a new roll pin.

Rick is a super nice guy. John he said next time you come in you prices are doubled.
