Im looking into instaling an egt sesnor on my rig. Im planning on mounting the bung right behind the y pipe which brings both banks together. Is ths too far back? I want to place it here in order to see a combination of both engine banks. Would it be wiser to mount the egt sensor somewhat closer to the manifold, or in the manifold? I quess each bank would be somewhat equal in temperature. Im also looking for ease of installation. I can install it on the passenger downpipe about 8" fom the manifold, is this a better place?
The reson I wish to install an egt sensor is because im in the process of getting my injectors/pump rebuilt and the pump timed at 7.5*BTDC. Then i plan on turning the pump up a little, and I wish to aviod a meltdown.
Also where can i find a cheap egt sensor? and is there anything else I need ot know before I do this install?

I would locate it in the exhaust manifold, as close to an exhaust port as you can. This will give you a direct reading. Time @ 8 degrees. Pistons start melting at 1250 or so.
In the manifold is the best place.
The pistons are the first thing the heat will damage, you want to know how hot they are.
If you mount it farther away you have to keep the gauge at a lower temp due to heat loss. But how much lower? Good guess 200 or 300 degrees. Why guess?
They are all cheap. Go price an engine and you will see what I mean.
