Is it the starter or something else?

1998 5.4 liter 4x4 is beginning to act up. At first, i thought the problem was related to a bad battery i purch from walmart. since it was 3 1/2 years old, i decided to get a new one. initially, the truck started strongly, but has since gotten to where in the morning, i turn the key and it clicks. If i turn it off and back on, the engine often starts. Sometimes i need to turn the key more than once, but then it turns over nicely. I had the new battery checked again, and it seems fine w/ over 800 cca's under load.

any ideas? i am thinking it is the starter but don't entirely understand the symptoms. Also, at $278 according to ford, i don't want to replace the starter and find out it is something else.

any ideas? can ford diagnose the problem accurately? has anyone else had starter problems? done it yourself?

thank you

First try cleaning all the connections (battery & starter) and grounds. On some the ground goes to the frame first then to the engine, clean that too.

Then if you need a starter get a good one at the parts store, much less.

If after cleaning it still has the same symptoms then take off the starter and take it and have it checked before purchasing a new one.

Ok, very helpful. thank you. I tend to submerge my starter in water every weekend, so there is a good chance it is bad, but it could be the connections. at this point, i have an appt scheduled to have it replaced. local shop (non ford) said he has a leftover starter that will fit my vehicle (ford brand) that a customer ordered but never had installed. He will install it for $210 OTD in an effort to get rid of it.

Have the starter solenoid evaluated first. A lot cheaper to replace than the starter.
