I am having an intermittent problem with the starter in my '65 F-100. Several months ago, the FOMOCO starter on my FE390 appreared to go bad. Once or twice, the engine would not turn, even with a new battery. Solenoid tested good as did wiring, so I removed the starter and replaced it with a new mini-starter with its own solenoid.
Initially, that worked fine, but after a while, I started seeing the old problems again. After running for a while, once stopped, the engine would not turn over. The ignition switch would turn, but it would take several turns (sometimes 5-10) for juice to flow to the starter. Once juice flowed, it worked like a charm. When juice did not flow, I could sometimes hear a slight click form the starter like a solenoid was failing to engage.
Removed and replaced mini starter under warranty. The second mini-starter worked great, until last week. Now the problem is happening again. Sometimes, turning the key won't get the starter to run. A turn of the key always powers up the dash lights, heater blower, wipers etc., just not the starter. I have to turn the key repeatedly to get the engine to start.
Could it be the ignition switch itself? Could I possibly have a second bad starter unit? Has anyone else had similar issues? Any and all ideas welcomed.
If it is only happening after the engine is warmed up from extended use then it may be the starter is sucking in alot of heat from the exhaust. Try warpping the starter in a heatshield to see if that helps. Sometimes replacing the solenoid works since the disc internally can become worn out with a build up of carbon tracks. If the lights and everything else works in the truck when you use the key most likely that is not it.
Thanks Mark, I will try the blanket. I actually have one from Jegs that I have been waiting to try out. It has happened once or twice when it didn't seem hot enough to cause the problem. I am also going to check the ground again and will post a resolution for the group (assuming I find one).
