Have a big problem with my Explorer!I have a 4R55E Automatic that won't
go backwards, not even in Neutral,it's totaly stuck.Forward is OK.
I have located the problem to the automatic transmission.
I also think that it starts on second gear on Drive, but i'm not
sure.
Has anyone heard of this before or have any ideas of what has
happend?
What year is your Explorer. My parents have a 2004 Mountaineer. They had a problem where it would delay going into gear. It turned out to be a solenoid. There was a bulletin (not a recall) on it at the ford dealer, so apparently its a common issue. Theirs was under warranty so it was no big deal. If your out of warranty, it might be worth calling a dealer (if there is a decent one around that will talk to you, some of them are a**holes) and ask if there are any recalls/bulletins on your trans.
My Explorer is a -96,so not so much hope for warranty!
Unfortunely the dealers up here are not so good at Explorer,
99% are European Fords in Sweden, i believe.I hope i's
a solenoid or something,but i begining to think that i's a
problem with the reverse band.
if the low reverse one way clutch fails you wont have first or reverse.it takes a new case to fix because the inner race for the clutch is pressed on the case.i have heard of independent shops that can remove the race and install an aftermarket race ,but i havnt seen it done
Not good news, but tanks for the tip!
Are you sure that you can easely turn the output axle from the
box one way,but totaly stuck the other way, with no "strange"
sounds if this has happend, and do you know if this is a common
failure?
it is a common failure when the vehicle is used in snow or mud, when you get stuck most people go from forward to reverse to try and get unstuck.the one way clutch has to hold and release, and in this exstreame condition the one way will exsplode.
For me it happend when i parked the car in my garage, couldn't get it out on the morning the day after, but the car has been driven a lot in snow for 10 years.
