I have two manual transmission vehicles, I ordered to Ford with the auto for towing. I am busy maintaining proper speed, keeping the wide trailer between the lines, etc. so I appreciate the auto when towing.
My new truck (2000 F250 SD 5.4) is a 5 speed manual. Old one (1997 F150 4.6) was automatic. I don't drive much in the city, so I don't mind the manual. For me, when I was looking for a new truck, I did not care whether it was auto or not. But......if I lived in the city, I would probably go auto. I know that we aren't supposed to do it, but I know we all do......Its hard to drink coffee, smoke a cigarrette, and shift, all at the same time. And god forbid, the cell phone rings while I have a smoke in one hand, a coffee in the other, steering with my knees, and trying to downshift into 3rd while going around a corner! Might have to let the call go to voicemail. Auto is nice, but I think that when you get right down to it, I would rather have a standard. It is a TRUCK after all.

I am on the fence on this one. I have owned only the torqshift in both a 2WD and now my FX4. Unloaded or moderate towing its wonderful, and I could not say any more good about the towcommand package on my 05. I do however, hate the way you have to work to drive while towing my 11K# tt up an down hills. I will give you my vote after I tow with the new Livewire. I told Matt exactly what my concerns were and he told me he could write and make it perform any way you wanted. So my preliminary vote would be for true dedicated fulltime RVing, or as a hotshot truck, get the 6 speed. For towing light loads or infrequent towing get the auto.
they arent all manuals. I have three mixers trucks with automatics and our drivers love them.
As far as superduties. I have had both and done alot of heavy towing. My automatic has been much better than my 6spd, but I have heard they have improved the six speed sense my experiences in 99.
