Automatic C6 transmission

I have a 78 F150 Ranger XLT w/ a 400m and C6 Automatic transmission. The transmission pan has leaked a little since I have owned it. I had it rebuilt about a month ago and it is starting to leak again!!! I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before or how can I remedy this problem before it gets expensive again.

Thanks,

Spin Chin

That depends on where it is leaking from!
The tail housing seal, coolant lines, shifter seal and band nut are not too bad to have a leak from, but the converter seal and the servo lever shaft plug require the trans to be pulled out to fix.
Assuming the case is not cracked!

Most pans are bent from over-torquing the pan nuts.
I and every one I knew hammered them (easy with either some 1/2 or 3/4 square rod held in a vise) straight before reinstalling them.

I have had the best luck cleaning everything up with some brake clean, spraying it on a rag and wiping the surfaces clean, cleaning the bolt holes real well with brake clean, using a cork gasket and putting a light coat of black silicone on the bolt threads before I install them and torque to specs. I let everything sit overnight before I fill with fluid. I have never been able to get the rubber gaskets to seal. I usually check the bolts at oil changes and after it heat cycles the first couple times after the initial install.

I found that the heating and cooling cycles tends to tear the pan gasket's as they stick to the case and the pan, (real hard and a pain to get off most times) and aluminum and steel have different expansion rates, hence the torn gasket, so I always put silicone on both sides of not only the pan gaskets, but all of them "a vary, vary, thin coating" and never had one leak as of yet, and they clean up real easy during oil changes also.

If you didn't install a new dipstick tube o-ring, check there. The old worn one will likely leak because the fluid level rises above it when the engine is off causing a puddle on the floor after sitting awhile.

My C-6 kickdown level (or manual control leveler) is weeping ATF. I replaced the O ring in the kickdown shaft, but it is still making a mess under my truck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a seal on the manual shaft?

There is a seal in the housing where the shift lever shaft goes through. You need to drop the pan and sometimes the valve body to remove the shaft and change the seal.

Thanks for all the help. I am lucky enough to be the second owner of this truck and the guy I bought it off of said it did that since the day he bought it. He said just bang on the middle of the pan and when you place it back on it will straighten itself out. Should I just buy a new transmission pan and forget the worries and headaches?

Buy a new pan or you will be forever chasing a leak with the old one. Sometimes you can try to straighten out the flange on the old pan, but it seems that the metal fatigue just lets it warp again. Banging on the middle of pan will generally do nothing other than maybe put a dent in it.

I'm in the same boat, just went through rebuilding the C6 in my 79 and after one look at the pan decided to get another one. After all that work, I don't want to get back under the truck for a while!

I am leaking fluid out of the kickdown shaft in my C-6. I have a new seal on the outside shift shaft, and a new O ring on the kickdown shaft. But there is endplay in the kickdown shaft. Maybe 1/32".

What can be done?

Thanks a lot in advance...

John
