Instead of wasting money on the ATF, which won't work for the numerous reasons already stated, try switching permanetly to a diesel rated oil.

That is odd that the lifter tick persists after replacing all the components. Have you tried snugging down the rocker end on the noisey lifter(s) to see if it quiets down?

OBTW Greg, welcome to FTE and thanks for joining us in the Oil and Lubrication forum!

ATF fluids are either a 0w-20 or 5w-20 viscosity. There is no magic formulation in them that would make them an ideal flush. The "old" benefits were that all engines used a Xw-30 or Xw-40 or even XXw-50 and the ATF being a thinner fluid had a cleansing effect. If you have an older engine that has had a diet of the heavier oils, try using a 5w-20 motor oil for a flush. It will have more detergent agents than the ATF and have the proper add pack to give the engine the necessary lubrication while it works.

FWIW, somebody at the FTE has an FE engine that they are running 5w-20 in and having great success. Maybe ol' Rustbucket might remember?

The only reason people had success using atf in the old days was that it was thinner and would mover over the parts and reach areas the thick and often carmalized oil would not .

Fix that exhaust leak

Yup, I would agree with that answer although it will probably cost you considering the age of your motor, most of the studs will break most likely. My old 300 in my 95 ticked all the time, never had a problem, I think most of them will do it eventually, learn to live with it or turn up the radio a little higher.
