So, I'm driving home the other night in my 66 F100. I have been driving for about 30 minutes and the ol' girl is running fine. I stop at the red light and the engine just goes dead!
I try to crank her back up and nothing but rumph, rumph, rumph. The engine turns and turns but no cranking up.
I figure some how it is flooded. I end up having to be towed home.
Two days latter I get a chance to look under the hood. Nothing unusual there.
I turn the key and she cranks right up and I drive around the neighborhood for about twenty miniutes with no problem.
The tank is full of gas, I have a new fuel pump in place and the carb. is tuned up nice.
The only thing I have done recently was at the last fill up I poured some gas additive in the tank.
So what do you guys and gals think? Could it of been the fuel addititive that killed the engine???
I have no other thoughts to what could of happened.
All help is greatly appreciated
I used to have a 66 Chevy stepside that did the same thing to me. It turned out that the wires on the coil were loose. I tightened them up and never had another problem out of it.
Just to add to possible thought; the additive could of lossen so particles into your fuel line and pass your pump and settle into your carb to clog once driving and over time the settlements could then floated up in your bowl until there force into the system again; Also what kind of additives did you add ?
Guys I kinda doubt that it is fuel additive related. If something were to come loose it would still be there and wouldn't run. Plus there are filters to catch that stuff. More likely is that it is electrical in nature as magee mentioned earlier. Got points/condenser?
Although I hope it doesn't happen again, but if it does, check for spark, and check for fuel in the carb via the accelerator squirter. That should get you going down the right diagnosis path.
Thanks for the replys.
If it is electrical would the engine turn over?
Sorry for the naive questions but I'm new to this stuff.
I just feel like it was some sort of vapor lock or something??.
you can have electrical problems when the engine cranks over.points, condenser, coil, plugs etc.if the engine cranksyou can eliminate the starter loop-solenoid,starter,battery.
Thanks again for the advice.
I think I really do need to change the points and condenser and coil.
I placed a new filter whenI put the new fuel pump in about three months ago. Maybe a new one would help.
Thanks again.
