i have an '80 f-150 ranger 4x4 w/ a 400cui engine that has trouble starting warm and hot. after driving it for less than an hour, i turned it off and then tried to start it up a minute later, but nothing but cranking. so then i let it sit for about 3 hours, and it still wouldn't start back up. all it would do is crank. so i left it over night and came back and it started right up after one crank. i drove it back home and turned it off, waited a few minutes and cranked it one time and it started right up. it left me pretty confused on the problem. in the past i have had trouble starting is up hot and cold but got all new electrical components, ignition wires have been checked and tested so i think it comes down to the carb. the carb is the original one with no rebuilds and i noticed there is a little leaking in the gasket. i think this could be fuel boil over but that would explain the hot start up. i was wondering what this problem could be and what i could do about it or if it is fuel boil over what could i do to fix it? thanks for your time.
If a gasket is leaking, it's not the fuel boiling - it's just leaking out or into the wrong journal inside the casting. And fuel doesn't boil "over"; it boils "out", leaving the bowl low or dry and fouling the jets from deposits. Have you ever sprayed it out with carb cleaner? Ever run carb cleaner (fuel treatment) in the gas? Next time, try spraying starting fluid or carb cleaner into the carb - if it cranks momentarily, it's a fuel supply problem; if it cranks & runs, it could be a starter, ignition switch or ignition problem; if it has no effect, it's probably an ignition problem.
