Ok I have searched and searched this site and the internet and am still having problems. First off I have a 1984 ford f250 with the 351W in it, single tank. I was driving the truck and was having no problems, then could not afford to drive it so it sat for almost 4 months. When I went to start it the engine would crack but not start, then I removed the key and the engine would still crank. So I replaced the starter solenoid, that fixed the cranking problem. But now it just turns and turns but not start. I put just a touch of gas in the carb, and BAM it started, but died as soon as it was gone. SO that led me to a fuel system problem. I checked the fuel filter, replaced it, and still nothing. I cranked it for a bit to think ok not enough gas in the tank, so I put 6gals in it, and still nothing. I pulled the filter off again and had no gas in the lines what so ever. Could my problem be the fuel pump on the block is bad, or the fuel sending unit gone bad? As I was under the truck there was a hose that came from the top that was clogged up, as I went to clear the clog a part came off looks like a valve of some sort, that is on top of the tank, ( no idea what it is or does). I need t o get this truck running again so please anything to help me get this truck running would be great.
The line that broke off my be the vent or EVAP line. I would do this:
Pull the gas cap off (so it has a vent for sure)
Pull the fuel line from the carb and put it in an empty plastic bottle.
Crank the engine for a few seconds and see if any fuel gets in the bottle.
If no fuel in the bottle, I'd be looking at a bad pump. It could be crap from the tank that got in the lines and clogged them also, depending on where you fuel filters are. Could be a clogged filter also.
If you DO get gas in the bottle; put the gas cap back on and try the test again. If you get no fuel, it's a venting problem and you are getting a vacuum that the pump can't deal with.
Let me know the results of that testing and we can go from there.
In my experience the rubber hoses on these trucks are melted toast by this time and need to be replaced. All of them, from the one that goes from the tank to the steel line to the one from the steel line to the fuel pump. Any leak in those hoses allows air in and kills the vacuum the pump uses to move fuel.
As for the fuel pump, check your oil as a split diaphragm will let gas into the crankcase. Smell the oil and cup heck the level as gas is a very, very poor lubricant.
