Distributor gear question

Anyone know if the 1981 5.0 f-150 came with a steel gear stock from the factory? I am in the process of swapping in a 92 roller 5.0 and it requires a steel gear. I have no idea if it is steel or cast! I assume the distributer from the 81 will work in the 92 since it is carbed right?

Flat tappet cam and roller cam cannot use the same distributor gear. You'll need to replace yours.

A stock 81 will have a cast gear. You can get a steel gear and replace it or get a distributor for an '85 mustang with a 4 barrel carb. There are plenty of aftermarket one's too. I'm running a Mallory 1 wire HEI.

Honestly, it's less of a hassle to just buy a new core with the steel gear on it. I think they run around 80 bucks from your local parts store, and all you have to do is stab it.

Drop me a nnote if you want a steel gear. Had gotten one from JEGS, a Crane steel gear for a .467 shaft and then discoverd our 77 distributor was 1/2 in shorter than what the '90 motor needed. SO we bought a Mallory dist witha steel gear already on it. Don't need the other steel gear now.
