I had to grind all the heads off the bedbolts for my 89 f150 supercab shortbed to do some fuel work. Now that mission is acomplished, how important is it that I go back with OEM bolts? Can I just go pickup some universal Grade 5 carriage bolts of the appropriate length and use those?
I just used grade 5 hex bolts and nuts, without a problem. I also used some large fender washers on both sides with lock washers. The hex bolts can get in the way if you are sliding stuff in and the catch it, but otherwise work great. I thikn I didn't use the carriage bolts because 1-2 of my bed holes were rusted and I didn't think they would tighten down properly.
I agree 92. Whoever put the body lift on my truck used hex bolts after all was said and done. I learned to hate them the hard way. Had 12 bags of sand in the back of my truck..... and all the starting and braking cause 3 of them to empty into my bed. I tired myself out swearing that day.
Carriage bolts work okay, as do regular bolts. Carriage bolts allow you to do the job by yourself though, as you can poke the bolts through the bed and underlying structure into the frame, and zip the nuts underneath without having someone hold a wrench above you.
