If fuel is low (less than 5 gall.) motor stalls in curves, of if I drive up the hill.
Last year my van stoped near the supemarket, and I heared no fuel pump sound... Why?
The unswer:
Well! I had to bue new, I prefered Bosh fuel pump of Mercedes S300.
I checked shut-off switch, fuel pressure. Its OK!
Today I removed this pump, it looks well! No codes!
All the pipes are OK! Fuel filter is new. There is no dirt in the tank!
So I have installed all this parts inside and tried to drive. Runs better, but this problem appeares periodically. When tank is full, problem dissapeares.
What may it be? Poltergeist inside the tank...?
must have been burning that ukraine potato vokda in that Aero, Pablo to eat up the pump like that.
must be new replacement position of pump fuel pickup or limitations of new pump in dealing with some air thru pickup..does pump pickup reach to bottom of tank....is there an air leak somewhere along the pickup tube? Aero fuel tank is flat bottomed
we used to have to back our Ford Model T's up a steep long hill, fuel line came out from front bottom of tank...ran dry when going up hill forward...
not a good idea to run an in tank electric fuel pump in a tank less than 1/4 full, electric motor is lubed and cooled by the fuel!
I would say there is a n issue with the baffles in the tank. When you hit a curve hard, all the gas sloshs to one side, and there is nothing going into the pump, causing the stall.
Or you might have issues with the fuel pressure regulator being weak.
I have the same ideas, but this problem appeared if less than a gallon was in tank before. Now, if there is less than 1/4 fuel after starting of engine I have to wait for 1-2 minutes on idle before drive, else engine runs roughtly about 1 minute...
I tried to use manometr of fuel pressure. I can see, that it increases fast after turning the ignition switch on, but after start of the motor it decreases for 5-10 seconds, after that it changes up and down, then stabilises.... And after that it runs well..... May be it is a problem with valve of fuel sender...?
Do you have a fuel tank that came from a CARBURETED CAR? My friend swapped a carbureted engine in a 1982 chevy pick-up for a computer controlled newer fuel injected engine. Electric fuel pump assy fit right into old tank but had problem you have. He had to change the tank for a later model with different baffeling inside. no more stalling. apparently carburetors can tolerate a couple of seconds of no fuel pressure while obviously, FI can not.
I once owned a 1973 Toyota Celica. Bought the car new. You could not make a sharp left hand turn without the motor dying. It went to the dealer umpteen times. Could not pinpoint the problem.....final result: the car was replaced.
I would say there is a n issue with the baffles in the tank. When you hit a curve hard, all the gas sloshs to one side, and there is nothing going into the pump, causing the stall.
This was common in the TurboCoupe. When the fuel level got too low in the tank, the car will hesitate under hard accelleration. Fill it up and everything is cool.
I'm having trouble understanding the original post. Did you install a pump from a different (Mercedes) car? I agree with 96, the pickup sock may not be mounted as low in the tank as it was originally. This would affect fuel starvation.
VanGo!
The pump is installed in original fuel sender and its mounted as low as it possible, 1/4'' from bottom... But I had no this fuel starvation for more than a year....
Is it possible that there is a leak in the fuel pick up? It would only act up when the fuel level got below the leak/crack/hole.
The varying fuel pressure is interesting. Have you checked the wires that supply power to the fuel pump?
The car will use the most gas under acceleration and when driving with a cold engine. Are you sure the mereceds fuel pump has the same flow and pressure as the correct pump would?
The pressure is the same, but flow must be better than flow of original pump, it's used for 6L V12 DOHC engine. I will bue Bosh fuel filter tomorow, may be it is not so good, as I think....?
Usually I change fuel filters ones a year, but this filter was installed a half of a year ago...
What is the normal fuel pressure on idle?
