I have a 2001 F-250 CC, V-10. It has just over 75K miles on it. I've had the truck for a little over a year now.
I've noticed that at lower rpm's the power steering has a little whine to it when trying to turn. It gets really bad in the cold just after I start it when I'm warming it up. Like today when its only 1 deg F when I went outside... Brrr. I really only notice that it gets bad when its cold. All summer, it was fine. Checked the levels as normal, and they were good. But during the winter, I seem to have to add fluid.
Anyway, while doing some searching on this topic, I found that some people suggested using ATF... What is ATF? I have added regular power steering fluid to my resivoir. Was that BAD?
I know that when its that cold, the truck isn't going to like being started... Heck, I don't either . But I'm worried that there might be something else wrong.
PS - Thanks for all of the GREAT! information that you guys give about your V10's!

you didn't do anything wrong, you have a Ford power steering pump. They are notorious for being noisy. Curiously, the pwr strng pump on my V10 is the first relatively quiet pump I've ever had on many, many Fords. There are some additives you can add, lubricants that promise to quiet it down a bit. I dunno about ATF, I think pwr strng fluid is about the same as ATF, but check it out first. I'd turn up the radio if it isn't low on fluid, it's very typical. If it starts REALLY groaning you'll have to look into it, but they're noisy on the Fords.
I've got 2 V10s and the one I use for work has been making noise for about the last 70K miles, works fine just makes a little noise. The other one doesn't make a sound. I have been running Fords for years and most of my trucks have had some noise from the pumps. Just be glad you don't have one of the old style that had the reservoir on the back of the pump because they were a leaking nightmare.
terry_opie I just looked at your profile and I see that you are from MN my home state (Duluth). From what I remember everything made noise when it was stated up there if it started.
terrie opie, in case you havent figured it out yet, ATF stands for automatic transmission fluid. and i have owned 16 fords and every one has had a noisy pump. none of them has ever went bad though. i just live with it. my V10 i must say though is very quiet. matt
I make alot of noise when I have to go out into cold like this too, but I just wanted to make sure it was normal... Everything works fine, and I just kinda overlooked it last year (since everything worked fine), but I wanted to get opinions and whether or not to have it looked at before the "extended" warranty expires.
