ok i now have 2 starters with a bad bendix's so i finally figured how to take them apart, i have the bendix off the starter and and it mostly taken apart, whats left to be taken apart is the insides. there is another snap ring inside it that i cant get out because the bendix is stuck in the engaged position.
does anybody know what im talking about, or has taken apart a bendix on one of these old external crash starters, 223 inline 6, ive been told this starter is used for all of these ford engines.
anybody know how to get the ring out, or know how to reset the bendix, it feels like something got pushed out of place inside and is jamming it engaged,
Man, I had the same problem. I had to take this drive apart to get it disengaged and after I put it back together and pulled it out it stayed engaged again. i wish someone could explain to me the theory behind the design of this drive. Anyway I had to push down on the spring loaded drive housing to get to a small external snap ring and it was a bitch. I haven't got back to it for a while so I'm still trying to figure it out myself. I read a thread about converting to an FE starter with a more modern drive that engages the flywheel from the front side but I don't know what an FE starter is. If I get it figured out I'll let you know.
Calcott, welcome to FTE. An FE is referring to the 330, 352, 360, 390, 406, 427, or 428 engines found in Ford cars and trucks.
Fooling around with a bendix starter can be frustrating. If you have the $$$ why not buy a new one with a warrenty for roughly $30 and stop hating yourself?
you may have to stand it on end and use a punch and a hammer to get it loose from the snapring. it sounds like it ran up over the top of the halfmoon snapring and just needs to be jarred loose to get back to original position. i prolly would not use that snapring or bendix again cause if it did it once murfies law says it'll do it again.
