On my 74 F100, 302, I had the ProBillet Distributor (model 8582) and MSD 6A Ignition box installed (model 6200). Also added 300+ Accel coil wire and Accel spark plug wires, and Autolite #45 plugs gapped at .044. Total was $400 for the above. I already had an Accel Super Coil.
petronix... i just did the swap myself in 15 minutes... takes no time and 80 bucks.. easy, simple and works like a dream... keep the same equipment, and just throw away points and condenser, insert little black box, and ring around the shaft, connect the wires, turn the key, and smile... that easy. petronix.. get it at o'reillys for $80
Great prices on the net! I bought mine from VAmustang. I eliminated shipping costs by picking it up in person. I replaced the coil when I installed the ignitor. Took me a while to do as I had to bypass the resistor wire (the ignitor needs 12 v), but overall a VERY easy, cheap, and effective upgrade. If you need a new distributor, then go with one of the other options.
I just had to put new points and a condenser in my 74 because it was like someone was shutting off goin down the road and caused it to backfire and blew out my muffler. besides that i am looking at that petronix or whatever it is called.i would liek to dump the points. when i switched engines in my 79 firebird i put a 68 engine and pulled the points distributor and put in my HEI one form my 301 orginally out of the car. works great with out points
Biggest bang for the buck would be a Davis Unified Ignition man. You wouldnt believe the difference a DUI will make. If you decide to go DUI you'll thank me i promice you that.
at www.performancedistributors.com I would really consider it. I run one and it will really wake your motor up and give you better mileage at the same time. But the increase in power is amazing.
