3spd speedo gear

I got a 3 speed standard in a '76 F100. The speedometer drive gear in the transmission (on the tailshaft) is about 2" off to the back of the tail shaft from the location where the cable gear goes into the housing. Does this mean somone put the wrong tailshaft in it or the wrong housing? What can I do to figure out which I need? I thought the gear was missing til i took the tail shaft off!

3spd speedo gear

I just replaced my tranny(with tailshaft) a couple months ago, and my speedo doesnt work. I stuck my finger in the gear hole, and couldn't feel the gear. I wonder if mines like yours. Does anyone know if they made different tailshafts like that, and a fix for it?

Wow, I did the same thing! I bought my truck that way and then ordered a gear for the thing. I now know that I dont need the gear. if ya do need the gear I can help you out! I never thought at the time but the gear is held in place by snap rings. You should be able to feel the grooves in the shaft if the gear is missing.
