I replaced my 3 spd toploader because the syncros were bad...
The replacement had a different spedo gear inside the tailshaft...
I pulled the cable to replace the gear on the end to match the one in the tailshaft and the cable end gear fell off inside the tailshaft...
Can I simply remove the drive shaft and then slide off the tailshaft, retrieve the gear and slide it back on "with a jack under the trans body, because the cross member attaches to the tailshaft"? Or are there parts that will become misaligned by sliding the tailshaft off?
Yes, that worked... was a little cautious but figured it it had to be done either way... it I broke it... well it was already broken. Now if only I can get the darn retaining clip off that holds the spedo drive gear on, oh yea, the drive gear is shot!
