I just bought an iPod (20 gig Photo) that I want to use in my Ranger. The truck has the factory CD only deck, and I cannot/will not afford to upgrade it, so I plan to use an FM transmitter. I am trying to decide between an "all-in-one" style charger/transmitter/holder such as the Griffin RoadTrip, and a regular FM transmitter and charger cord. There is a 12v socket on each side of my radio (there's a pic in my gallery), and it seems that one of these should be good for a bracket, but I'm not sure how much room the thing would take up.
Anyone have any insight into what the better choice would be? Brand/retailer recommendations?
I own the Roadtrip and am very happy with it. If you live in a major city, such as Chicago, you might have station issues but down here in central Illinois it does fantastic. The only thing I don't like is that it will not swivel left to right. I highly recommend it!
Thanks. I occasionally drive through Boston, but other than that, I can't imagine interference will be a problem.
One more question: Are you able to use any sort of cover on the iPod while using the Roadtrip? I'd like to use a silcon skin for the thing, but I can't tell if it will fit into the bracket with it on.
If you want to protect your iPod from scratches, do not get the silicon cover. Dust and particles of dirt stick to it. Check out http://www.agent18.com. I have this cover. I KNOW that the iTrip fits on it, and iTrip looks like the biggest, chunkiest transmitter of 'em all (at least as far as I can tell from the online photos).
I'll look into the Agent18 cover. I'm not going to go nuts about scratch protection, but I do want to keep it nice if I can.
As far as transmitters, the Roadtrip is different from the iTrip. It's a charger/bracket too. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/roadtrip/
Not sure if yours will fit with the skin or not. I use a Nano on mine and it fits with the skin on without any problems. But, then again, the Roadtrip was not designed for the Nano so mine is literally being held up by the usb plug. So far, no problems of any kind!
john112deere does your Ranger radio have an aux button or do you know if it is a changer controlling radio? If so there is an Ipod interface that will allow you to select your playlists, FF/REW, and select tracks UP/DOWN. It even charges your iPOD.
I have installed many of them for customers. With this interface you gain a TRUE digital connection that beats the FM modulator any day.

Griz
My Roadtrip came with the bracket for the Nano ( which I have) and the brackets for all the iPods. If you check Griffins website, you can get the Nano bracket seperatly.

I don't have an AUX button. I don't know whether my head unit supports a 6-disc changer, but the FM transmitter appeals also because I am often in one of my parent's cars on a long trip, and would like to be able to use the iPod in them, too. (my father's car I could use a cassette adapter, but my mothers would also need the transmitter). I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, so I'm not too concerned about sound quality.
Update, after some messing around, I did figure out how to get the Roadtrip to swivel. It has now become a 9 out of 10 for me! The only thing I would like better is if it was wired direct to my aux but I am too cheap to pay the $200 for the setup.
I'm putting one in my truck. I have the Alpine with the Ai-Net controls. This allows you to buy a converter to operate your iPod directly from your HU without ever touching the iPod. The converter charges it as well. Will never have to worry about it. It'll be in my glove box and it will stay there.

KC, I have a 2001 Expedition that has the CD Changer Controller head unit, but does not have the changer. What type of connection is on the head unit for Ipod adapters and such? Does it have RCA jacks, or some sort of proprietary plug?
I'll call tomarrow for you and find out which one you need. Does your Expedition have the factory subwoofer? Also is it only a tape player, only CD player or both?
