My door locks are all starting to fail. Started with tail gate then rear doors and now front. they work intermitently once in a blue moon but never all of them.
Have read in other forums the actuators are failing (thermal fuse). Anyone had this degree of failure??
This is a well known issue with early Superduty and Excursions. Do a search for door lock actuators and you'll find posts from users including me. I replaced the four doors with the new revised units. My tailgate just started failing, so I'll do it soon. Actuators are $30-40 each and there's instructions in the forums for replacement. It cost several hundred dollars to have the dealer do it.
Oh by the way, I don't know what you refer to related to a thermal fuse. The door lock actuators are mechanical devices with motors inside. The motor gets weak or fails, especially if the vehicle is in a high temp. climate.
My door locks were starting to act up when I bought my 2000 Excursion with approx. 100,000 miles on it. I plan on replacing all of them, working or not, shortly.
On one of the posts someone pulled a unit apart and there was a thermal coupling that prevented over usage or a stuck switch/ child activity scenario. He by-passed it and the unit started working.
This must relate to some other issue. I took one of mine apart. There's just mechanical parts and a motor. Understand the unit still tries to work (you can hear it), but it doesn't have enough strength to drive the lock assembly.
The ford book claims they are center of IP (instrument panel). can't view from underneth and pulling the IP takes time. Just want to make sure before I start taking things apart.

I've now replaced all the actuators in my '99 SD. Dealer wanted $100 labor plus $40 for the part. So I bought the part and did them myself (one at a time as they went out - would have been easier to do them all at once while the procedure was fresh in my mind, but nice to spread out the cost). There is a great article in the tech pages on how to do this.
The relays are on the firewall inside a plastic cover. They are straight ahead of the heater / radio gap. Releasing the cover can be tricky. replaced all three as a precautionary item $4.00 ea but it didn't make a differance.
Have replaced tail glass and rear doors so far and they are now working fine. Will do the front doors monday.
Other than removing the door panels it is easiest to remove the outside door handle assy's and release them and slide out vs. removing the latch as the ford manueal suggests. Helps to have an extra set of hands / eyes.

I just replaced all of my actuators on my ex. It is very easy for a handy guy. I read the instructions posted on this forum then orderd the parts from ford. I now enjoy working locks.
