I've got a '88 F-350 4X4 5-speed that just had the dual mass fly wheel death.
My question is, does anyone know what the tranny weighs w/o the X-fer case
attatched? I can't find a tranny jack to rent any where so I have to buy one
and dont want to get one too small in the weight department. Thanks
Any tranny jack should work . I pick my 5speed up and put it on a floorjack and slide her in . It's heavy , but not too heavy .I have bench pressed it a time or two, but I don't recomend it ...lol.
I do recomend the LUK solid mass replacement kit , works great .
I was figuring it was in the 350-400 lb. range but wasn't sure. Ordered the Luk kit first thing this morning. Wasn't about to buy a replacement from Ford. Can't find a tranny jack to rent around here so I'll have to buy one. Hate buying something that'll be used just once. Thanks.
Use a floor jack, no sense in buying a tranny jack just for that little job. I just set er on the floor jack and had a buddy balance it while I bolted er up.
Thanks guys, will be doing this alone Dan. Did find a jack for $70. that will do 450 lbs.
That's not to big a bite. Turkey season starts this Saturday, so it'll have to wait 'till
after next weekend. Plenty of time to get a jack. Somethings are a little more important than wheels! LOL
I got a little roll around tranny jack from Harbor Freight. Made pulling my ZF-6 an absolute breeze, and it's by far the biggest transmission I've seen in a light duty truck.
I just lifted my transmission up at the rear and slip my floorjack under it then had to use my left leg to pump the floor jack while I kept the thing from falling off the floor jack. It wasnt to bad really. If you can lift that dang flywheel you can lift the rear half of the transmission. How did you get that transfer case down?
Now that you mention it my back does hurt a bit. LOL! maybe thats from the cold wet gravel driveway. I gotta get a heated garage.
Thanks guys, Cookie88- oredered that jack already, guess that was a good choice.
912504X4- I had replaced the clutch about 80K ago and did it with a
floor jack, at that time I tooke the tranny and x-fer case down and re-installed it
as a whole unit. After that I said to my-self, I said,"Self, we are never doing that again
without a tranny jack". I had used a floor jack then. It sucked to say the least. LOL
Yes, I can laugh now.
