no i don't think so. the manual in an 85 should be a 4 speed (no overdrive) unless a swap was done previously. you don't want a 4 speed with todays fuel prices. defiantly need overdrive.
however it will bolt up i believe. we took a ZF5 out of a 93 IDI and put it in a 95 stroke. i think the ZF5 will bolt up to a 6.9 so i think the bellhousings are the same. but the clutch engagement systems are different. ZF5 i know for sure is hydraulic and im pretty sure the 4 speeds are a linkage setup.
Thanks for the info, its raining big time here but I going to go check it it out some more I think its a hydralic clutch and also a 5 speed , Was there a DMF in 85?
My 4 speed is hydraulic clutch. There are a couple things you need to do to slap it in there, and floating around somewhere a member found part #s to use your 6.9L flywheel with a ZF5 clutch.
I'd like to do it but i've got to find one first...
EDIT: The DMF was a 7.3L thing. the 6.9L uses a solid flywheel.
I like to swap everything flywheel / clutch too, the DMF sucks big time so I guess the real issue would be does a 6.8 flywheel bolt to a PSD and is it the same dimensions as a PSD flywheel...
You will not be able to use a 6.9 flywheel on the PS. I don't know if they would physically bolt, but I can imagine the balance will not be the same, and the flywheel itself is not as deep as any of the dual mass. You can't even use the 6.9 flywheel on a ZF swap.As I had said, it has less offset, so the clutch wouldn't work right. BTW, all diesel T-19's are hydraulic. The only manual linkage newer than 80 was 80-81 at most. There were no factory diesel trucks at that time from Ford.
You need to use an original 6.9 pressure plate with a clutch disk for a 7.3 IDI. Yo have to do some work on the lever for the through out bearing. You need to build the ends of the lever up to take up distance. It will work. Have done a few of them.
