This may sound stupid, but would removing the power steering pump cause any real problems, other thank making it harder to steer?

power steering

Troy, None that I know of, if I am wrong someone will be along shortly to straighten me out. BTW why do you want to do away with the ps?

Well if you take the pump off the fluid left in the steering gear box will probably be forced out the pressure/return line and make a mess, unless you cap off the lines.
Then the problem would be there is no place for the displaced fluid to go as the steering gear goes back and forth, so you might blow a seal on the gear box and then that mess thing again
I guess you could remove the pump, put the open line ends into a container and turn the steering wheel stop to stop to expell all the fluid from the gearbox. Then cap off the lines.
Then the question is doesnt the fluid also lubricate the steering gearbox???
Like jowilker said why do you need to remove the ps?

No real good reason. There is a fluid leak somewhere that I haven't found, and the cap keeps blowing off the pump. It has happened 3 times since I got the truck. The last time I wasn't able to find it, so I will have to buy a new one. I really can't afford a new pump right now, so I was thinking about just doing away with it temporarily. What if I just take the belt off until I can get it fixed.

Mine wouldn't be drivable without the power steering unless you changed the steering box.

I thought about taking my belt off too. I needed a vehicle and my power steering would wine constantly. When I looked at taking the belt off it wouldnt turn my water pump if I took it off so I ended up getting a new pump the same day. I didnt look at my 77 but my 79 has ac and that might make a difference in how the belts are arranged. Just look at what other accesories it may turn and as long as you have an altenator, fan, and water pump you should be ok.

My truck use to have a 300 6 cyl. until I replaced it with a 351m/400. But before that the power steering bracket broke and I "HAD" to drive it without the power steering. Talk about a work-out. It was a ruff 2-3 months. If you can I would try to buy you a new one or just keep working on that leak. I finally got mine working right after a new pump and hoses. NO MORE LEAK!!

Thanks for all the input. I have a non-functional 1986 Ranger that has a good pump. If it looks like it will fit I'll try it.
