I just purchased the Superchips 1706 and very happy with it. I do some occasional towing (about 8000 lbs) and notice that the superchips has a Tow Mode. Do I still use the Tow button on my shifter or do I let the superships Tow Mode handle it? The ford salesman told me that the tow button will change the shift points AND use the trans to assist with braking. I know that the SC programmer changes the shift points but does it also assist with the braking? Thanks
I think if you're gonna be towing around hilly areas with us and downs then you should use the Tow/Haul on the truck. Fors mostly highway stright road towing I think you're fine with just the Superchips setting on.
Tow Safe is simply a tune profile on the SCMT that allows you to tow more than 8000 lbs without risking motor damage - you should still use gauges when towing an monitor EGT. Tranny shifting is somewhat modified from stock but shouldn't be confused with Tow/Haul mode.
T/H mode further modifies the shift points over non-T/H mode and will keep the torque converter locked up more. It also adds tranny braking to help hold back the truck on down hill sections. The SCMT doesn't mess with any of the braking feature.

Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! Please read the Guidelines, it will help you to navigate through and understand FTE.

See you on the boards.
Enjoy FTE …..
It can melt pistons.... Thats just one example. Blowing part of the cooling system apart is a posibility too due to overheating (but I am guessing the melted pistons would be first).
The Tow mode on the SCMT is essentially a less aggressive tune.

Tow haul most reverts the truck to a different set of shift tables, friendly to heavy towing.
The SCMT revises both the non-tow/haul tables and the tow/haul tables for optimum trans operation.
Just like a stock truck, if you're towing light and on flat roads, keep t/h mode off....if you have a heavy trailer and are on hills, turn it on.
The SCMT essentially has 3 engine programs and 6 trans programs.
3 power levels (Tow, Econ, Performance), and two transmission programs for each (one for when in tow/haul mode, one when not in tow/haul mode)

In tow mode, I dare you to try and get the EGT over 1100 degrees (maybe 1200 in an extreme case).
I've had the trucks to the FAILURE point on the dyno (not meaning engine failure, but failure to accelerate because of intense load).
The dual eddy currents on the superflow can simulate more load than you will ever tow......that tow program is safe and really makes the most power under load. Part throttle power becomes extremely apparrent under load, too.
When towing 10,000 to 11,000 lbs with the Tow Safe tune up long 8%+ grades with sustained periods of full throttle operation my max pre-turbo EGTs were in the 1150 range.

I was referring too the performance mode program, and the reason why you would run it in "tow-safe" (to avoid melting pistons).
