Here's a shot of a guy named Dan's homemade running boards. Actually they are stock running boards that have had diamond plate bent up and welded over the skeleton of the old ones. The ribbed area is where most of the rust out occurs (other than at the ends). I started to do a similar job, with just replacing the upper surface with diamond plate, but gave up. The rolled edges are really hard to work; it's thick metal and it got stretched when it got dented and crinkled.
So I bought some brand new ones from Sac Vintage, ordered smoothies by mistake. Nicely made, but when they strapped them together for shipping, it dented them, and close examination showed large heat distorted areas on the top surface. So I'm returning them for the proper ribbed style.
Don't know if this helps, but the diamond plate looks sharp, I've seen other trucks in persojn with chromed diamond plate, and also aluminum diamond plate. Sprayed with black Rhino liner, it is durable, strong, and practical...
I saw a 56 with wood running boards and front bumper at the Turkey Run last weekend in Daytona but I didn't get a picture of it. It looked good though.
Several months ago someone posted a thread with pictures if some wooden running boards that he had made. If I remember correctly, there were quite a few detailed pics in the gallery. They turned out really sharp. Sorry, I can't remember the name though.
The search function doesn't seem to be working for me right now-it just times out. You might try searching for "wooden running boards" or something like that.

Those do look good.Like some others said,I have seen wood running boards and have not been impressed. Those are nice.I wonder if you could put some of the bed liner stuff (rhino, hercules, etc) on the wooden ones?
