I rarely come to this site anymore, but i had some spare time this morning and saw your thread. I don't know what style of running board you're after, but I did build a set for my 55 mainly because the stock style didn't reallly fit the truck's style.
I wanted a smooth board and also wanted my exhaust tips to exit through the running board.
If you click on my build link below and go to post #32 you will see what I did to build them.
Those are some sik boards! Yeah I kinda want some smooth boards like yours. I start my welding class next week so hopefully ill have some decent ones this summer...
Ps- I'm 33 and taking my first shop class lots of catching up to do!

You will find that building boards like mine are no big deal since you're not dealing with compound curves. Just make sure your patterns match your truck at the fenders. My truck being somewhat modified, changes the size of the boards a little. I always find that after fabricating something like this ...that looking back.... I would do some things differently.
There are a lot of good fabricators on this site, maybe others will chime in with ideas for you to consider.
Good luck with your class. I think you will find it to be time well spent.
I haven't started on mine, but I will be building my own.
I'm going to shorten the front of the box and extend my cab and I'm using a 78 F150 4x4 chassis. So no stock running boards will fit mine. I plan to use my running boards too. So I'm going to be building them out of some much heavier materials.
