is the '88" the code for a ford 8.8?
and if so, what is a 8.8? and what can I do to this axle, for example, can I change anything in the pumpkin or the replace the whole thing?
the front tang reads as follows:
409 E8T NO
610 309-4
how does this tell me it is a Dana 44?
thanks for the help
The 88 is for a ford 8.8 axle (8.8" ring gear). You have 4.10 and 4.09 gears rear/front respectively, according to the tag. The other information is just info like build date/location etc.
From the rear tag, it looks like a limited slip 4.10 axle. Yes, the 88 means a Ford 8.8" axle. I don't know what you mean by "change anything in the pumpkin or the replace the whole thing", though. Can you make your question more specific?
Nothing on the front tag tells you it's a Dana 44. What truck is this from? How many lug nuts?
And the front differential is a 4.09. And it is open. All F150s 4x4s have the Dana 44 front axle. And all have the 8.8 Ford corporate rear axle. And no--the 8.8 doesnt have a removable third member--like the Ford 9 inch.
You have a rare option--4.09/4.10s LS differentials--I looked for several years before I found my F150 pickup with these ratios. Most 4x4 F150s of this vintage are 3.54/3.55 gears--in my Rocky Mountain area of the country.

I did miss the "4" in the 4L1088 line on the tag
as to change...you answered for me, I didnt know what I had, so I was looking for advice as to more torque to the wheels by changing the axle or the inside of the axle.
since it cant, should I keep this or look for a different axle?
I also read online about welding the axle tubes to the housing, should this be done?
Thanks...
