Hi, I have 25k miles on the Excursion and had to have the EGR valve replaced already. They recommended using an additive which would help with the build up and poor fuel that's available. Can anyone recommend an additive to use?
There are several, Motorcraft makes one that they say will keep the EGR carbon free, but that's a sales pitch I got from the service writer. I been using Bully Dog fuel reformulator for the last 20K miles and I like it. I has a combustion enhancer that makes it burn cleaner. The stuffs not cheap about $8 a 30 gallon fill-up.
Powerservice or Stanadyne are excellent. Powerservice is available at Wallyworld and gives me about 2mpg extra every time I put it in. I run 16oz per tank full mainly because it's cheap insurance for the injectors and the diesel we get sucks. So far (knock on wood) I haven't had any EGR problems, but then mine's unplugged also. It also gets a regular "blowing out" too..........usually by any of those Drudge trucks that think they can run with me
I've been adding Power Service since the first tank along with the disconnected EGR and have had NO PROBLEMS with the truck, 20,000 miles, about half towing a 6000 lb travel trailer across this beautiful country of ours.
I've been using PowerService for about 1/2 of my EGR valve's life. (25,000 miles total now) Still been bitten by the EGR valve and poor run condition when towing across the pass. I disconnected it that night. It's been running fine since. Still run PowerService for the other good things it does.
I don't think there's a fuel additive that will keep the EGR valve's from plugging up.
My 2003 Excursion has the 44 gallon tank and I use 32oz of Powerservice per tank full (double dosage). I have used since new and have 61,000 miles on the ODO with no problems. I use the grey bottle (cetane boost) for spring, summer and fall and use the white bottle (anti-gel) for winter.
My EGR is original and still plugged in and so are all 8 of my injectors. I went with Powerservice due to availability (truck-stops, Walmart and other retailers).
I have used for cetane boost, cleaner burn of fuel and lubricity. With low-sulfur fuel, I use for main reason of lubing the fuel pump and injectors... other benefits are a plus in my book.
About once/tank I step on it for a mile and "blow it clean"... have no idea if it helps or not, but I feel good doing it... or pass someone in a cloud of black diesel exhaust!!!! I guess I figure that the extra boost and flow will "blow-out" any loose carbon build-up.
Good luck,
Jeff

I use Stanadyne in every tank. 17K miles. never a problem with the EGR which is still connected. Bought it from the Diesel Stop once then off E-Bay. Read about the Stanadyne Company on the Net and make an "educated" decision on the product you like..Tim on this site suggested reading about the products before you just put them in....Good Luck..
I now have a group of buddies running the Motorcraft additive. All are getting 1 to 2 mpg improvement and much quieter operation. We use the brand from Ford since this is what improvements others -- Stanadyne, Diesel Kleen, etc --provide and we won't have any future warranty concerns.
For what it's worth I just read in my Owner's guide supplement that "It should not be necessary to add any aftermarket additives to your fuel tank if you use a properly formulated diesel fuel that meets the ASTM D975 industry specification. Aftermarket additives can damage the injector system or engine. Repairs to correct the effects of using an aftermarket product in your fuel may not be covered by your warranty."
I just bought my first diesel a week ago so I am just learning. I see some pumps say Cetane 40, last night a Hess station had Cetane 42, which I assume is better. I saw nothing about any ASTM D975. How the heck do you know what is good or bad diesel fuel?
