Could go on and on, just figured I would post some of the better known brands. If you would like to look yours up online, check here. If you do a search, just use the word diesel, as it brings up all msds's related to it. http://www2.siri.org/msds/index.php

Whew!!!! And I thought I didn't have much to do today. Great info.

Power Service looks a little light of their info....they are supposed to be sending me an MSDS directly in a few days. Hopefully will have a better breakdown.

THANKS !

"Whew!!!! And I thought I didn't have much to do today. Great info."

Been awful hot here lately, just finished up a major overhaul at work this week, trying to enjoy the AC this weekend, also playing on the computer doesn't cost me a dime. Trying to save money for the new house.

Keith, hopefully you get better contents info on the one you receive. As always, any manufacturer can choose not to disclose some of the info, and claim trade secret info in doing so. One of the shockers here was Amsoil, chemical makeup looks like it is a well designed product. As well as Stanadyne with 85% solvent as the main ingrediant. While I am not a chemist, solvent is a cleaner, not a lubricator.

Great info and what started my other post was Ford's new diesel fuel lubricity additive and their MSDS sheet which showed alot of Kerosene.

The question from someone that is a fuel expert or chemist, is how to correlate all this info into some kind of Excel spreadsheet and figure out who has more cleaners, more lubricity and more "other stuff". Some of the chemicals have fancy names and other, like Ford say Kerosene. Have no idea if it is the same stuff in the end, but should make us all wonder.

So.... what are really getting and buying and are we really getting the benefits of what we are paying for? For those products that tought "increased cetane"... what chemical is doing that and is there enough to make a difference?

I would like to think that using Powerservice (my choice of brands) is good, but now I am more confused than ever before.... anyone smarter than me on this topic??

Thanks,

Jeff

Keep in mind that the centane value plateaus around 50 anyway. Anything anyone is doing beyond that is over kill for pure cetane value.

Over dosing however, probably increases enhanced cleaning, lubricity, and water dispersion.

If we can find someone that can figure all this out we will likely find that there is a pretty good balance between cleaning solvent and lubricity properties, in all the major brands...I mean look at WD-40...cleans and lubes.

Hmmmmmmmm. What if?????? Naaaaaah..... ?

I'm no chemist, But all the listings contain large percentages of detergent/solvents, of the Naptha, Xylene and Benzene derivatives, tell me that most of the additives we're buying are more for cleaning than lubricating.

OK, that sort of makes sense. Sludge buildup in anything leads to less lubricating value. Have we been undereducated in the lubricating values Diesel (sulfur)? Have we been trained to think that these additives have contents of "lubricating" quality, when in fact the additive is assisting in allowing our fuel to lubricate as it should, by having a cleaner system?

If I'm off track here, then please someone chime in. Because, just like Ford says in so many words, there should be no need to add fuel conditioners and modifiers except for extreme cold temperatures where Diesel jelling can occur or if cetane values are not at proper values.

Ford has revised their thinking on this with multiple SSM's and BMs covering a lot of different circumstances.

Cold Temperature, Lack of Power, Poor Economy, Hard Start, Excessive White Smoke:
This could be due to gelling of the fuel, formation of ice in the fuel tanks or lines or poor fuel quality. If diagnosis finds no cause for the above symptoms, try using a fuel conditioner, such as Stanadyne
Performance Formula or equivalent, that will improve the cetane level of the fuel. Do not use any product containing alcohol. If the conditions improve with the additive, then find another fuel source or continue to treat the fuel. Broadcast Message 1309, 1464; SSM #17406.

And I guess that's where I was trying to get, unless you've got a run time issue, then no additives should be required. But... When you do have a run issue, then the first thing they endorse is a fuel additive. And from the MSDS sheets, all I see are base solvents. So cleaning our fuel systems makes sense to me. I've done this in my fuel injected gas engines for years. It's smart money. What I don't see in what Beachbumcook has pondered is what lubricity enhancements we're getting from the additives. -Other than cleaner fuel systems. I can tell you that Xylene is just shy of having acidic values. Benzene too.

What ever happened to adding a quart of tranny fluid or two stroke oil to a tank of fuel? Or would that gum up the wart. Hmm??? alternate tank fills with two stroke oil then an additive/cleaner?
