Thanks for all your help, guys! I had no idea the EGR thing was such an old topic! Sorry I didn't search first...
I guess my take on additives is... I am only going to have the truck for a year, or two. I use it as a daily driver around town. I might take 2 long trips per year. That being said, I don't see using additives as being worth the effort. The truck will have less than 20,000 miles on it before I sell it.
I will pull the plug on the EGR valve, though. I think that will be benificial because I do a lot of sitting in traffic and city driving. I would think this will keep the intake and oil cleaner w/o the EGR.
I should probably be offended by kw5413's comments calling me a 'brainwashed Amsoil dealer'. No sweat off my back. However, I do suggest he educate himself about their products, namely their oils and greases. I am not here to sell or promote anything. I just mentioned a product I use and he latched on and morphed it into something else. Sounds like he is the one who has an axe to grind. Perhaps ignorance is bliss.
"Smoke and mirrors"? Come on. Mileading? Now really. Get real and get the facts first. I don't use all their products and nor do I think everything they make is the best at what it is for. However, it is undeniable that they were first with a true full synthetic. Every single test shows their products beat the competition. No one can produce an indepentant test that shows otherwise, if you can I would like to see it. How many of you are NASCAR fans? Most teams run Amsoil in their cars, REGARDLESS of what is on the hood! What's more, the oil companies know it too. The teams have it in their contracts to be able to use it.
I ran 31K miles in my F150 w/5.4L that I traded in at 50K. Perfect oil analysis reports, oil could have gone longer, but I needed to remove the bypass filter before I traded it in. Facts speak loud.
No reason for you to be offended unless you are an agent for Amsoil.
All one needs to do is go to their web site look for oil certifications and see how many you find. And testing...which independent tests would you like to present. I would imagine there are some. I just have not seen them.
If you will read my entire statement...no wait...here it is..."While I would never pour the stuff in my truck some people have had very good experience with Amsoil. The shame of it is... Amsoil folks seem to have to use smoke and mirrors to sell the stuff."
My point here is that if it is so good, it is a shame that they aren't more straight forward will their claims.
Do an "Amsoil" search here to learn more about both sides of the Amsoil issue.
So take offense or not, it's no sweat off my back either. But, maybe you should educate yourself before you suggest same for others. Thru your own admission you posted additive information based on something you thought you knew 10 years ago.
I am trying to do some research on what I think is a fairly new addititve that goes by the name of BioPerformance Fuel. It seems to come in pill and powder form. The marketing hype calls it a "Fuel Enzyme Catalyst".
So far everything I've seen on this product looks and smells like Network Marketing hype (mumbo-jumbo)-- that is nothing that looks like real science to back up the claims.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here has heard and/or had any experience using this additive?
Anyone ever try Howes diesel additive? A friend gave me some a few years back. They use it in their big trucks for gel/water and lubrication. Works great for water, but as far as injectors or keeping egr from clogging, I haven't a clue.
Just curious as to if anyone has ever tried it or compared it to anything at wal-mart.

I haveused it and found no problems with it. I was dicouraged as that the color of their product chages or is inconsistent when you see it displayed in stores and truck stops. SOme are a deeper color gold and others are very light in color. To me, this is inconsistent mixing and formulation???
I know it works well for water and anti-gel, but not sure on cetane boost (if at all). It does lubricate... so this is a key feature now days.
I used PowerService due to sales volume, readily available and price. White bottle (anti-gel in winter) and grey for all other times.
I used Howes anti-gel and fuel additive for 135,000 miles with no problems , no failed injectors or injection parts ... Howes is available at most/all truckstops I have fueled at ...

I guess I should interpret the lack of any comments regarding BioPerformance pills, as a bad omen.

A "friend" of mine just gave me his card, promoting his new "business". BioPerformance...for fuel savings 18-30% or more on combustion engines. He says, "Only available through sales people, not at stores." I'm smelling "snake oil", but I'm still searching around for more info on the Internets.

I agree, all I can find on this stuff is marketing hype.
The stuff looks like salt pills we gave farm animals years ago!
I am taking delivery of my'06 PSD this saturday. This thread has been very informative in helping me make my decision on additives, since this will be my first diesel. It so helpful having guys with all the expierence with these trucks to be able get this type of info!
