I don't think there is any auto tranny more reliable than a C6. In stock form, the AOD is probably Ford's worst/weakest automatic for truck applications. I have heard, however, that the weak components can be be "beefed-up" to make them more reliable.
I have to agree about the c6.I have seen them run very low on fluid and still be ok.Seen them get excessively hot and be ok{do not recc. any of this].An aod is in my opinion a very weak trans.Seen many of them replaced when a c6 would not have been.Understand this is just an opinion
The real question you need to ask is how much do I want to spend.
A C6 without anything done to it is far superior to and AOD, but for the right money a good trans shop can build you a bullet proof AOD. I would recommend finding a local A.T.R.A. recognized shop if possible
I've seen alot of "High Pro" Junk come out of amco run shops
Thanks guys..i was thinking about maybe switching to and overdrive transmission, but was unsure about the durability of them. I didnt know that they made other overdrive transmissions until i got to reading other posts..are all of the stock overdrives as un-durable as the AOD?
I have a 1978 F-150 with the great C-6. NEVER a problem. I had it rebuilt 2 years ago with 180,000 miles on it and 22 years old! One thing I have always done too......I run full synthetic tranny fluid and this tranny shifts soooooo smooth and positive and most of all it stays cool!
I have an 86 GT mustang with 191,000 miles on the clock... never had a bit of problem out of its aod tranny... still barks the tires hard in 2nd.... but I couldnt stomach the idea of replacing the C-6 in my 78 F-150 with a 460 and 36" tires..... with the aod... just me tho...
