Found this site!!
Just wanted to say Hey!!
I lost oil pressure, and the lifters started rattlin' pretty bad!!
Took out the distributor, checked the pump drive-good on both ends!
Took a pump shaft from a 460 (they are about 2x longer) put it into the pump and turned by hand, the pump turned good, and the shaft fit was not sloppy!
Ran the pump with a drill, the pressure guage went up to normal.
Having pulled an oil pan before, I didn't want to if not necessary!
I drained the oil, left out the plug.
I got 2 gallons of white kerosene, used a small funnel and tube and flushed out the oil pump/pan! Got all sorts of solids and goodies out of there, I expect they were in the pickup tube screen!! Flushed until clean, put in new 5w30 and a new Fram filter(I saw you guys say Frams suck, I'll use a motorcraft in the future) put in the distributor, fired it up, and with all it's glorius start up chatter, it finally settled down to a nice quiet idle, has good oil pressure too!!
Will using a motorcraft filter help eliminate the chatter at startup?? My truck has done it since it was new-and it chatters LOUD for about 3-5 seconds, until the idle drops!
I'm glad I found the site, there's alot of good advice to help me keep the ol' truck goin!! I've had it for 11 years, these new truck prices scare the crap out of me!! I'll keep my old 300x6 banger as long as possible!!
