I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the 12 ton press in Harbor Freight? I'm looking for one to do the bearings in a 9" rearend and the wheel bearings on a 31 spline axle, and other misc. things.
Thanks,
Bob
I got one a while ago to press the front wheel bearings on a Ford escape. It comes disassembled. The iron is strong and seems to be able to handle more than the bottle jack it is based on will. I would suggest that you assemble it on a level surface and be careful to get it plum; else you will be pressing at an angle. No matter how slight it will cause problems. You will not be setting any speed records with this but all in all it works just fine (for that project and a couple other uses I have found since then).
I like mine, bought it a couple years ago (think mines the 10 ton) and paid for itself on the first use, shop wanted $140 to press ball joints and I only paid $100 for it. Found lots of uses for it since. Should've bought it years ago. Gotta love hindsight. lol
Northern Tools has a comparable 12-ton press, which goes on sale periodically. Just to give you another source. Harbor Freight also puts theirs on sale sometimes.
Berkad,
How would you go about add air to one? How would you go about replacing the jack handle to have it operated by air? Sounds interesting but I wouldn't know how to do it. Don't suppose you'd have any pics by chance?
Thanks

Check the sears catalog page 66. The air over hydraulic jacks have a different base with an air cylinder inline with the standard hand pump. A 12 ton is about $200.00
As a word of warning-
DO NOT get the Cummins Tool 12 or 16 ton presses! They twist while jacking them, no matter how carefully you assemble them. It's a very weak design.
