egr elimination
Took the carb of and the egr spacer pull ed the egr off and blocked off the ports to the egr with a peice of cardboard gasket material. removed all the other vacume lines associated with it. MAN WHAT A DIFFERANCE IN THE WAY THE MOTOR RUNS . SOOOO SMOOTH NOW . And on top of that i was able to advance the timming to almost 18 deg before it started to ping under load. It even helped the driveabilty. Man I love my truck!!!!!!!!!!The only question i have is about the bowl float vent on top of the carb If i pull this off will it affect anything i was worried about fuel spillage.

I have often wondered about the EGR like who came up with this bright idea. The hole that it blows exhaust through isn't big enough to pull a significant amount of exhaust so the amount of reburn is minimal. After a short time the port starts to clog up with carbon so then the system becomes less and less effective until its useless. A motor needs plenty of oxygen for good combustion and good combustion makes for clean emissions. How can displacing good clean air with carbon monoxide be doing any good?
Hottarod, I agree that the EGR is a bad system. It was designed as a cheap way to reduce the NOx emissions back in the old days. The small amount of burned gases that are re-introduced, actually cools and slows the combustion charge. This reduces emissions and allows for a leaner mixture. I had to go up 3 jet sizes when I disabled mine.
I believe the EGR system is a vintage emmission system. It no longer is in practice. With stricter emission laws it is a hinderance rather than a help. Reciculating carbon monoxide never seemed practical but, by removing emmissions from the exhaust system they passed the test for a few more years.
