Newbie here. I've been a lurker since I bought my 04 f-150 5.4L Lariat 4x4 last October. I read the horror stories and prayed I wouldn't have to deal with the issues that have been brought up but I have. The latest issue I have is my 4X4 won't egaged when I turn it to 4x4 low on the shift on the fly. It will engage in 4x4 High, but no low. It's been in twice for service, but it works for them just not for me when I'm on the launch ramp and need it. It's going in tomorrow to see if they can fix it. I just want to see if anyone else has had this problem and what the fix was. Thanks in advance for any information.
Are you putting the truck in neutral to shift to low range? The truck must be in neutral with your foot on the brake for the low range to engage, at least that is how my truck works!
In order to shift it into 4x4 low you have to be stopped and transmission in neutral, foot on the brake then switch it into 4x4 low, wait until 4x4 low light turns on the instrument pannel then you can shift the transmission in gear.
It is all in the owners maual.
If that doesn't work definetly take the truck to the dealer.
It used to engage fine until 4 months ago I was leaving from work and 4X4 engage on it's own while not switched to 4x4. It would not disengage and it was stuck in 4x4 low. It is a 50 mile drive home from work on the highway so I had to call for a tow to take it to a local dealer and they were able to fix the problem, but now it engages intermittantly. I've had more than a handful of electrical problems with this truck and hoped this 4x4 issue would be a quick fix.
