I am looking for assistance with the factory wiring that came with the tow package on my 04 Expedition. Talked to the dealer today and they say that I have a light/std. tow package, ie class III/IV hitch and 4 pin plug. There is a wire for an electric brake and connector under the dash for the brake controller connection. The dealer said that everything was connected as far as under the hood. What I need to know is how do I convert the 4 pin to 7 pin and where should I get 12v power from?
well the relay is not here so you need to buy that and will have to run wire from the battery to the 7 pin to get your 12v. what are you planning to tow? i assume you have the 4.6 enigne?
Go to the dealership and ask them for the harness with the trailer wiring. Mine cost $60.00. It comes with the seven pin and the four pin plugs in one mount. Put the relay in the fuse box and that should be all you need. I just did this on my 01 and it works perfectly. charges the battery and everything. the harness plugs in near the drivers side frame rail by the spare tire.
It is on an f150 Supercrew. It origionally had the four pin trailer plug. I bought Ford part number YL3Z-13A576-GB. Plug that in after removing the old harness and put a relay in the fuse box. Should be all you need. Mine added the electric trailer brake, charge wires, seven pin plug, and four pin plug next to it.
I pull a 25' trailer with mine. I added a set of two inch add a leafs in the rear. My truck sits level when hooked up and handles a lot better than stock.
you can't add add a leafs to a new expy. but the new suspension is much stiffer to start with. i have loaded the back of mine with 2200 lbs of plaster and it went down maybe 1.5 inches.
I am not looking to make it a HD pkg but to convert the 4 pin to 7 pin plug so that I can connect a trailer with brakes and charging capabilities. I have found a adapter but I would much rather use a Ford wiring harness that I know is compatible.
how much does that trailer weigh? have you considered you will also have to install a aux tranny cooler. the factory tranny is not made to tow and was not made with a aux tranny cooler. it only has a intank coil cooler which does almost nothing. what are your rear gears?
Trailer - 4200. No, have not considered it. I am not sure about the gears. It is more than likely whatever was standard. I was not looking for a tow vehicle when I bought it, just something to replace a totaled 99 Expedition from a drunk driving accident, no not us, another driver.

You might look at the adapter and see if it has the same connector that is on the driver side frame rail by the spare tire. If it is it will work just the same as the ford and probably cheaper. One thing also to consider if you are buying the tt from a dealer ship and haven't finalized any deal as of yet. Make them throw in the wiring and install on your rig. You'd be surprised at how far they will go to close a deal.
