7 pin trailer plug question...

I just purchased a 2015 F150 that did not have any kind of tow package. Why someone would order a truck without a tow package is a mystery to me. I have added a 7 pin plug. It looks like the previous owner had installed a 7 pin at one time then removed it. He had the wires run for the brake controller. My truck is not using the factory controller but a after market controller. I ran power for the center 12v aux pin but I am not getting power for the 12v charging pin which is to the right of the top center pin on the truck. The wire was already there. I can not find what fuse it is under the hood or by doing a search. Does anyone know the fuse # for that one? Is there a relay?

This one is confusing.

The factory tow package uses something called a "Smart Trailer Tow Connector". Dumbest design decision I can think of...this thing switches voltage only when it detects a completed circuit indicating the presence of a trailer. All outputs shut off when it doesn't detect anything there.

So the question is whether or not the previous owner somehow tied his plug into the factory wiring, or if he routed it himself. I don't have a good answer to your question in either case, but you should probably start by figuring whether or not the +12v wire was connected to the factory electronics or not.

I think I may just run a wire from the battery with a 30A fuse. Does anyone see an issue with that? I realize it will not shut power off when the truck is off but as long as I am aware of it I don't see an issue.

That's exactly what I would do. As long as you don't leave a trailer connected and drawing power for a long period of time, you should be fine.

My 2013 7 pin connector had everything working except constant power. I needed it to charge trailer brake battery and turn on inside trailer lights. In order to have it work I needed to install relay (slot#9) and install fuse in (slot #21). I have the factory towing option. Supposedly when the truck is shipped these are in glove box of factory trailer equipped trucks. ( not installed at factory) Guess they forgot to include them in my truck.

Not needed on the new 2015 and up.
