well i just bought a 66 F-100 with a 352 and would like to put a little extra hitch in it's giddy up... here is what i was thinkin...
1971 390 block
speed o motive 3.984" stroker crank
fed mogul 9.9:1 pistons
erson roller rockers
performer FE heads (i will hand port them)
texas chill single plane manifold from shelby enterprises(im thinkin this is a little extreme for this motor)
crane cam grind# H2782
D.U.I. dist
hedman headers 1 3/4" primaries, 3" collector
anybody know what i will have to bore it to to get appx 416 inches?? any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I think you have a pretty good overall package. The single plane manifold is the only thing I would change. I haven't looked up that cam, but I'm assuming from the part number that it is a hydraulic with 278 degrees advertised duration. If that is the case, I think you would be good to go with a Performer RPM or a Blue Thunder dual plane.

I think the cam he's referring to is the Crane 343801.

I think you'll like that build.

A .030" overbore would give you 416.7 cubic inches. Final bore size would be 4.080".

About the single plane, according to Desktop Dyno anyway, you would give up a lot of top end horsepower by going to a dual plane. Of course with a single plane, you give up some low end torque. Either way you'll have a fun motor. The choice is yours, based on your priorities.

interesting selection of parts there. Some I've never heard of.

And I like the idea of the DUI, but only a few guys here have actually tried it.

As for the intake and crank, do they cost substantially more than a Edelbrock or SCAT respectively?

the kit from speed o motive comes with the 3.984 crank, ford racing stage 1 i beam rods with 8740 bolts, fed mogul 9.9:1 pistons, rings, and clevite rod and main bearings for $1175... rusty is right about the cam i was referring to, the 343801... i still havent chosen a carb yet, any ideas?? i was thinkin along the lines of a demon 870 or somethin close to that... anybody wanna run that in desktop dyno?

so is this going to be a gorund up build? what kind of machine work? how much over bore? what about using a 428 crank to make a 410?

he's basically using a 428 crank at 3.984"

That seems like a good price for the rotating assembly. I know a SCAT crank, H-Beam BBC rods and custom pistons will run closer to $2000.

I run a Barry Grant Speed Demon Carb at 850 CFM. I think they run well out of the box for a medium-hot street motor.

It seems almost impossible to get a 428 crank for under $300-350.

343801
458hp at 5500
492 at 4000

comp cams 274x
475 at 5500
496 at 4000

And the comp cam doesn't really give up anything on the bottomend.

*******stock edel heads and rpm manifold, BT would be more, as would a single plain.

I think a 750cfm Holley would be a more appropriate carb for this motor.

Here's my DD2k based guesstimations:

Crane 343801 cam, single plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
455hp @ 5500rpm, 470ft-lbs @ 4500rpm, 382ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Crane 343801 cam, dual plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
429hp @ 5500rpm, 456ft-lbs @ 4500rpm, 410ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Comp 33-248-2 cam, single plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
455hp @ 5500rpm, 469ft-lbs @ 4500rpm, 390ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Comp 33-248-2 cam, dual plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
430hp @ 5500rpm, 460ft-lbs @ 4000rpm, 422ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

As far as Desktop Dyno is concerned, the cams give about identical results, with the Comp giving a bit more on the low end.
Lets try something:

Crane 343941 cam, single plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
448hp @ 5500rpm, 474ft-lbs @ 4500rpm, 399ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Crane 343941 cam, dual plane, 750 carb, edelbrock unported heads:
424hp @ 5500rpm, 464ft-lbs @ 4000rpm, 431ft-lbs @ 2000rpm

Edit: Note that all these are run using unported edelbrock heads. Your number will be higher. How much higher depends on the quality of the porting job.

as near as i can tell the best deal on a 428 crank is to go with the dsc stroker crank for $375.. internally balanced and using chrysler big block rods.. i dont know what pistons ya gotta use or if they're custom or not.. if i can finally talk myself into a 410, thats the setup i'll probably go with.. they just rake you over the caols for a core if ya ain't got it otherwise.. cheapest i can find for a true 428 crank is about $450, turned and ready to go..
