I am converting my '72, 302/C4 to a manual transmission. It is a 4 speed OD (T-170) out of an 85 F150. I got the tranny in today and the front half of the 2 piece drive shaft. So all that is left is the rear drive shaft. I had to make another trip back to pick-a-part to get the slip yoke from the 85 because the splines are a little different than on the '72. Anyways it looks like the rear drive shaft will have to be shortened by about 1".
Everything else bolted right in. I even used the trans mount from my auto and the cross member did not even have to be moved.
Hi fordxxx, I am also trying to weigh in installing either a ZF or a E4OD since I am looking for some kind of overdrive. But I do not know what all is involved when installing a ZF. Can you give some idea since you are also going for manual? Mine is a two wheel drive 1979 F100 with C6.
You didn't mention what engine you have. The best way is to find another truck with the same engine that is a manual and then rob all the clutch pedals and linkage. Actually that part of the conversion was very simple for my '72, and is probably the case with your '79, because all the attachment points were on my frame for the clutch linkage and the hole was through the floor where the clutch rod goes.
For the clutch itself it is safest to get the flywheel, bellhousing and starter from the same vehicle so they all match up. For the 302 there are apparently different diameters of flywheels although I only ever came across 164 teeth ring gears. Also with 302's you have to be aware of the flywheel balance for different years and make sure you get the right one. For a 79 you will need a 28 oz balance. This is also the balance for all 351W's and I used one of them for mine.
If you like laying under your truck with dirt falling in your face then it is great fun.
Well I finally got my truck on the road with the manual transmission. I must admit that I am suprised that it is as noisy as it is. I haven't got a proper cover yet for the hole in the floor but even so is it supposed to whine so much in first and second gear? Is that a sign that it is worn out? This is a tranny I got from the local pick-a-part so I have no idea what condition it is in. It shifts OK and the clutch works great. What is involved in rebuilding one of these?
I have read other post that the jump from 2nd to 3rd is very big and I must agree. I have to rev that little 302 out before shifting into 3rd in order to maintain any kind of acceleration. Whatever RPMs you have in 2nd will be cut in half when shifting into 3rd.
Any feedback or advise will be greatly appreciated
