72 460 engine motor mount problems

I have a 72 F250 2 wheel drive long bed Came with a 390. The original motor has issues. I wanted to swap a 460 out of a 72 Lincoln and the Lincoln trans. Tried the cross bolt motor mount and perches from a 460. Thought it sat a little high. I put the 460 FE style motor mounts on to bring down the motor.(after market mounts) Put a rear sump pan. I got the motor level. (at the intake)
The tail house shaft on the trans sits really close to the cab. 1 inch of touching the bottom of the cab. I even lifted the cab to see if the clearance would help. No real improvement. The only alternative is let the engine hang down lower so the a$$ end sits lower. The trans sits so close to the cab the drive shaft will not even slip in the rear of the trans (2 piece drive shaft). And yes i will have to convert it to the slip yoke. Any body have any suggestions?

Simple. Use a Ford 460 instead of a Lincoln 460... just kidding.

Actually, all the engine swap mounts I seen say they're not compatible with a Lincoln engine. I'm of the opinion that you'll have to fabricate your way out of your predicament.

If the trans (C6 I assume) is out of the Lincoln it is about 10" longer than the truck trans.

This swap has been done many times and I'm sure others will chime in.

And I have no idea why they would state not compatible with a Lincoln engine the 385 blocks all share the same external dimensions and engine mount locations. Unless it is an oil sump exhaust manifold issue.

460 / c6

2 things I had to do way back with the same problem. Mount the transmission crossmember under the frame and have a driveshaft shop make you a 1 piece shaft with a constant veliocity joint on either end to smooth out the installation. My truck is a short bed but a lot of long bed trucks have 1 piece shafts. I put over 100k on my truck with this set up.

460's not installed in F100/350's (2WD only) until 1973.

Block casting number D1VE-6015-AB or A1B or A2B .. Internal Balance =

1971/73 Ford/Merc cars 429 / 1971/78 Lincoln/Continental Mark 460 / 1972/76 Thunderbird 460 / 1973/79 F100/350 460 / 1975/78 Econoline 460 / Some 1979 F150/350 & Econoline 460.

No 460's in F100's after 1976, no 460's in cars after 1978.

Passenger Car & Econoline 460 engine mounting parts will not work in F100/350's.

kenny nunez,
When you droped your trans were u level at the intake? If so how much of an angle did you drop it? I think you r telling me the constant veliocity joint takes up the drastic change in angle and copensates. I believe the drive shaft I got with the motor and trans is a con. veliocity drive shaft. BTW it is a C-6 trans

460/C6

The main reason I had to mount the crossmember under the frame is the C6 had ribs on the top and they hit the floor. My truck was originally a standard where the floor is lower. I had the tail housing that had a flat mounting for the rear support, the one you have may be different. Try to find one with the flat pad. As far as what angle I had it on I cannot remember, it was 1980.
I have the the Lincoln pinion companion flange and so the cv is only on the rear all you need is one.

I believe LMC offers mounts to put a 460 in our trucks. These mounts weren't available when I put a 460/c6 in my 68. My first 460 came out of a '75 Lincoln. I used the car trans mount and bolted that to the original truck crossmember. Then, with the front of the engine hanging on an engine crane, I slid the engine trans rearward onto the truck frame, just till the trans tunnel was almost touching the cab floor. Then I put a level on the car, and lift/lowered the engine till the carb was level, with the trans crossmember still resting on the frame under the cab. Then, I took a bunch of measurements and my dad made a set of frame perches that would bolt to the truck frame, and the Lincoln motor mounts. I hope this kinda makes sense......

Is the tranny hump in the floor different from a c4 to a c6? Would that make a difference?

68murc Yes I put the trans dapt motor mounts in and that seemed to help bring down the motor. Using the 390 FE towers with the one stud (FE style) that converts to the 460. Kenny that is a very good suggestion about the rear tail housing. The lincoln trans has mounts that are at a 45 degree angle (1 on each side) and are very small in size. I think I have a buddy that has a flat style. Last weekend was really a trying experience and I had a couple of other engines with problems that I was not expecting. Was really disgusted with everything.. But with friends like you guys helping it makes it all worth it. Wanted to say Thank you!!!
