Yes, stock, when you first turn the key on, the coil positive terminal will be full battery voltage. After a few seconds...I can't remember how this is determined....the voltage will drop to something like 9 volts or so. You can check this with a voltmeter. I think if you've put in a resistor it's probably in series with the stock one so you're coil voltage will be even lower...not a good thing.

I don't see a risister anywhere in the factory wiring. If any one can tell me what kind of volts it should have that would be great. And is the resister protecting the coil, or the distributor. Thanks

I don't know where the stock resistor is myself. I do know that on my truck (73 F100), the voltage to the coil is full voltage when you first turn on the key and reduces to something like 9 volts (if I remember correctly) after a few seconds. I learned this when I was converting mine to the Crane XRi electronic ignition. I had to run a separate full 12 volt wire to the Crane unit. (this was all spelled out in the instructions from Crane). I believe the reduction is to protect the coil.

Good Luck,

Tracy

Sounds like a classic case of the nylon coming off the timing gear. As to all this voltage BS. The reason the is full voltage when you first turn on the key is there is no load on the system with the engine not running. When you start the engine there is a load and you now see the true voltage. BTW, Ford has used a resistance wire for as long as I can remember and it is in the wiring harness. If you have power at all to the coil, the resister is good. The voltage reduction is to keep from burning up the points at idle.

If the reduction is to prevent the pionts from burning up do i need a resistor at all because the unilite is LED triggered. And in the Unilite directions it says the resistor is to protect the Ingition module for burning up, are they talking about the distributor or what? I think i'll pull the front cover off and put a new timing chain and gear on, The old one looks fine and is tight, but just in case i missed something I'm going to replace it. Just to narrow things down more.
Thanks.

Does the resistor wire look the same as a regular wire or is it easy to see if I follow the coil wire
