stator loose?

351W EFI '90

I took off the distributor cap and noticed the stator?? (upside down cup with notches held down by 2 small bolts that the rotor snaps into) wiggles. Is this normal or should it be tight . The bolts dont seem loose but I havnt tried to tighten them yet. The shaft itself doesnt move.

There should be no slop between the trigger armature for the PIP sensor (stator) and the distributor shaft at all. The PIP sensor relys on the trigger armature to send timing information back to the computer and the ignition module. If you are conerned that the armature is loose where it shouldn't be, you can remove the SPOUT connector like you would to check the base timng and with a timing light, see if your timing marks "jump around" a lot. You have to remove the SPOUT connector to ensure that the timing marks line up in the first place.
