It's time to replace the power steering box in my '78 f100.Any of you guys have any opinions on what is the best parts store to buy one at?I'd love to find a quicker ratio box or one that is a little tighter but haven't been able to find one.Any opinions would be great.
well i went thru the same thing. What is the problem with yours? if its leaking, ford still sells a seal kit. If the sector shaft bushings are worn, it easier to find a good remanufactured unit, then mess with the bushings. Heres where the problem starts. Many places that sell the boxes are lousey units,, i tried many brands, even a ford oem unit. Mine still was better, so i just replaced the sector shaft that was bad, and reused the box. Your best bet, is to find a place that can rebuild yours. Unfortunately, there isnt any way to change the steering ratio on these. With a saginaw box, yes, there are ways to customize the steering ratio. Since these werent offerd on ford, and i know of no conversion kits, your sort of stuck with your box. Good luck, sorry this is lengthy, but i know where your comming from, cause i researched it a loooong time!
Thanks for the advice.I knew I would have to replace it soon.It had quite a bit of side to side play when you turn the wheel and now the seal is leaking real bad throwing fluid on my headers.I had tried a reman. unit from Napa a few years ago on my '76 and was not impressed.
I got one from Auto Zone which turned out to have a different spline on the end connecting to the steering shaft. There gonna send my core in to have rebuilt and said to have it back in 5 days. I hope they do a good job rebuildind it. The cost is 219 and 160 core. So one replace the steering pump when replaceing the steering box? I already bought PS new lines. Is there a way to flush the steering pump before reinstalling? thanks
I may sell my original 1979 F100 steering box (power). Good condition. Play is acceptable (minial). Contact me - jermafenser at mindspring.com if you're interested. Not trying to sell something on the forums which isn't allowed. Just helping.
jowilker on my steering box where the steering shaft connects the spline there has a flat spot on it, not round. I called the place that rebuilds the steering boxes and he said that mine is very rare and that he has seen very few like that. So I returned the new one (rebuilt) and sent mine directly to the rebuild company and there gonna get it back to me in 5 days they said that it should only take 2 days in house to rebuild. Costing me 80.00 bucks for shipping which beats the heck out of switching the steering shaft and 219.00 for the rebuild. This steeing box belongs to a pre 77 and a 1/2.
