I have a 1993 f250 4x4 w/ an E40d trans. It has 256,000 miles on it. My wife drives it more than I do. Latley she has been telling me that it sounds like it is hitting the revv limiter too soon (at about 2 grand). I know the revv limiter isn't set until the rpm's get closer to 3 grand. Could this be my ip not being able to keep up with the motor or could it be a bad tach sensor. Right now I am just drawing straws. Any ideas?
If the tach is jumping around it could just be the sender by the oil filler....... Your wife should be complaining about wierd shifting from the trans too........ Check the sender wires where they exit the sensor on occasion they will pull out of the sender and contact each other shorting the pulse.....
The dead tach should send the automatic trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
the tach isn't jumping but now that you bring it to my attention a few months ago it was shifting irregularly but it fixed itself. I like those kind of repairs. the gears would bounce between OD and 3rd gear. Now it just starts sputering at or a little after 2 grand on the tach.
Do you think that air may be getting in the fuel system......any smoke indications from the tailpipe. What are the fuel tank levels when this surging/sputtering happens.....
have you had any work done on the injectors since you own the vehicle? Is there any evidence of fuel leaking anywhere? Does it feel like the engine is missing or coming up against the governor? and cutting out. When was the fuel filter changed last? If you have some injectors or even one injector acting up, it will feel like the whole engine is coming uncranked. Take it for a drive and let us know what it is doing and when.
I havn't done any work on the injector but, there is ALOT of white smoke at start up but it goes away when it warms up. i changed the fuel filter about a year ago. It does most of its sputering (missing)when its half to a quarter full. if i did have air in the lines how would i get it out?
first thing is change the fuel filter. be sure to fill the filter with clean fuel on install. is the sputtering basically when engine is cold or all the time? If there is air in the system, it should clear up on its own, unless there is a leak in one of the fuel return caps or hoses. Kits are available to repair this problem. Let us know how you make on the filter change.
