how to pay for engine?

how do you guys usually pay for your engine builds (or other projects) do you save up pennies, pay as you go or do something like put it on the plastic and pay it off?

the reason im asking is that i got my old bronco back- the one i drove when i was 16, but the engine went bye-bye and it will need another anyways. im just trying to find outif i can afford to build my own engine in auto technology at college

I bought mine in 2 payments on my credit card, and paid it off.

MY 351 went in my truck and I needed it up and running. I pulled the motor myself and brought it to the engine shop (they did a so-so job but thats another story). I started saving up right away. A few weeks later when the motor was done I went and paid for about 1/2 of it and kinda set up a payment plan (they kept the motor and I paid them) about a moth after it was done I had the rest of the money together and got my motor.

My next project I am saving up for ahead of time, but that is becoming difficult as other "important things" come up and drain my project funds savings, like my dishwasher dying.

Doing the work on projects sure does save alot of cash, but to pay for my projects, I buy a cheap project, do a quick fixxer upper on it, then sell it for more cash, do a few of these and you have enough for your own projects.

The smartest method for paying for things that depreciate in value is to always use cash, check, or debit card. For projects that have the capacity to appreciate in value (like real estate), financing can be a real smart move.

Cowboy's advice is right on. For the big ticket items I block them off in affordable segments. Like buy the pistons and rings, then have the heads rebuilt, then the block and so forth. I pay cash almost always. And do as much of the work as possible yourself. It takes longer and requires more patience, but that is my advice.

I'm just now ready to throw together my spare 300-6 shortblock, built on the installment plan. The bores were excellent, so it just got berry brushed to break the glaze, then I bought the gasket kit, then the rings, and I just got the bearings last week.
