Truck started running really bad. I can t keep it running and it is backfiring all over the place. I give it gas and it doesn't accelerate. As it starts to rev up it hits a point and then backfires. Then re-revs and backfires. Is it time for a new timing chain? Can I tell without removing the timing chain cover? I would like to avoid a day long job.
pull the distributor and the roll pin is what goes through the shaft to hold the drive gear on... check your timing before you pull the distributor though...
I will check the timing roughly by trying to line up the tdc mark on the balancer and then checking under the dizzy cap to see if it lines up. If not then pull the dizzy. Any tricks to that?
doing it that way leaves the possibility of being 180 out... if it wont run long enough though you will have to do it that way... so just make sure it points at #1 or #6 when you get er' lined up... if the roll pins broke you'll have to fish the gear outta the motor most likely, i just had to do that on a small block chevy- a 3/8 long ratchet extension with a couple of wraps of black electrical tape workd perfect if you dont got a extendable magnet.. LOL the things one can come up with in a pinch right? if the pins gone you probably will want a new gear, they get chewed up pretty bad when everything isnt right...
If the roll pin breaks the engine most likely will not run at all. If timing was 180 out, engine will not run. If the timing chain did jump, it will run, but not good. Setting up the engine on TDC on the firing stroke and looking in the dis. is a good way of checking. Doing this the dis. should be pointing at #1.
