building my own exhaust

i have just gotten my hands on a 4inch downpipe and what i want to do is buy 4inch tubing and just clamp everything together with my 4in 4out dynomax muffler and make my own exhaust.. but what angle bend should i buy for the tailpipe to run out the side behind the tire

Thank You

That's up to you. What do you like to see? I would think anywhere from 45* to 90*.

Skip the muffler and 90 it in front of the back tire. You will have the pass. window down all the time to listen to the sound of it.

i agree skip the muffler. i used a 45 to come in front of the rear tire. sounds great but does get your tire and wheel sooted a bit. after 2 weeks mine looks like its covered in dust. it not black or even close to it but it is dirty. see my gallery for pics of it. i did use 5 inch chrome for the tip that i slash cut.

Good looking exhaust tjbeggs. I really liked how you did your intake. Does your intake piping go all the way from the turbo to the filter?? What did you use to make it and where did you get it? I'm very interested in making my own intake. I plan on getting the van turbo w/ all the upgrades so I'm going to be needing to make my own intake.

For the intake, you can buy a Napa 6637 filter and just take out the box you have and hook it up to the intake hose. I used a piece of 22degree 4" exhaust pipe from the local exh. shop to avoid the ribbed intake. I had to cut the exh. fitting on both ends to make it work. Like I said, about $60 total.

kilapapipa, how far does the piping go to. Does it go from the turbo to the filter or from the ccv to the filter?

for your truck you will have to do ccv to filter since the intake tube reduces from 4" to 2" for the turbo inlet.

you will have to do the CCV mod if you want to do this on your truck. check out my gallery for the whole 2 pictures. i used a 3" pvc coupler to replace the piece where the stock ccv came in.

i was going to do this but i figured rubber doesnt contract heat like metal does and the stock tubing doesnt slow down the air coming in much with that huge filter and turbo sucking like a banshee

Yeah I've got the CCV mod almost done, I'm just still trying to figure out how I want to route it. I have an 01 which angle should I get for the filter, 22* or 45*?

Mine just goes from ccv to filter. Here is a better angle.

I used the 22* pipe. I have my ccv rerouted over the master cylinder but to do it right you need to reverse the plastic cover on the valve cover so the ccv exits near the firewall (you can see it in the picture)and then you can send it directly up over the master cyl. This will allow liquid to drain back in and not out your hose or freeze in the hose. Mine is routed along the frame to the back bumper to avoid stink in the cab.

i got all the parts from napa excapt the clamp that holds the filter off the inner fender. it is s 6637 filter just like the kwik then 45 degree 4" pipe to a rubber coupler for used on big truck intake tubes. i also switched to a superduty rubber boot off the turbo and did the ccv mod to open it up a little more.

FYI this is an exact build of the tymar intake but i found the parts myself (and really didn't save a lot of money even getting parts at cost) maybe saved 30 to 50.

just a little comment, i would not strap the filter down, as there is no ribbed piping that can take the torquing when the engine moves side to side, something is going to eventually pull out. i would just leave it in there free, its not like it is going to move around....

Crank Case Vent mod. the stock setup sucks oily mist from the crank case, into the intake, through the turbo, and on the intercooler and pipes. over time, an oily film builds up on everything. even my intake boots were seeping oil through them, from the inside out. this simple modification (only cost me a 15' length of hose) reroutes these gases into the atmosphere. sometimes it emits a cloud from under the truck, so i decided to tie mine into my exhaust.

i have some pics of the CCV i made in my Gallery.

Does anyone sell a 4" downpipe alone?
